FIELD CAMPAIGN
Snow Survey
PI: Cathy Geiger
Co-I: Robert Harris
The snow survey will follow the survey lines set out by the in-situ team. Note that the EM-31 transects and snow survey transects can not be collocated exactly as each needs to be performed over fresh snow. The snow survey should proceed the thickness survey (i.e. keep 100m ahead of the EM-31).
Aims
- Estimate bulk density of snow at each survey site.
- Estimate the spatial variability of bulk snow density.
- Identify spatial patterns of snow layers, with an emphasis on identifying layers that could affect RADAR penetration to ice-snow interface.
Method
Snow survey measurements will be taken every 100m, and include:
- density core
- Snow pit to determine layers in pack for estimating density variation in pack.
Priority of transects:
- N
- S
- IceSat line
- NE
- SW
- SE
- NW
Equipment
- Snow sampler tube
- 10 large ziplock bags
- 100 gallon size ziplock bags
- sled
- scale
- calibration weight for scale
