This page gives our latest map of the status of the Arctic stratospheric vortex and anticyclones as well as a briefing and forecast on the upcoming behavior of the Arctic middle atmosphere. This site presents research observations as well as data products from a variety of government agencies. Access to the tropospheric and stratospheric and tropospheric data can be found here and mesospheric data can be found here Current Briefing:During the first week of November the Arctic vortex became distored above 20 km by a weak Aleutian anticyclone that formed on the 4th. Poker Flat sampled inside this anticyclone while the other lidars sampled in the vortex. In the upper troposphere, the subtropical jet over the Pacific strengthened. This results in increased vertical shear with westerlies below the easterlies located along the equatorward flank of the anticyclone. |
