The purpose of this study is to reveal a probable pattern of dense water cascade from the northwestern Laptev Sea shelf under conditions of realistic bottom topography, hydrographic background, and atmospheric forcing. Another important objective is to estimate fluxes of mass, heat, and salt associated with cascading; these fluxes are poorly known, but are of high interest for Arctic climate research.
We applied a primitive-equation regional model forced by surface buoyancy flux to simulate a dense water outflow from the shelf through the winter of 1984-85 when the northwestern Laptev Sea was covered by recurrent polygon surveys. (Fig. 5)
Two polygon-shaped surveys were carried out in fall and spring of 1984-85 by Russian helicopter expeditions covered northwestern Laptev Sea shelf and slope.
